FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO WERE BORN IN, LIVED IN OR NOW LIVE IN MAINE
|
It's always interesting to check out a list of
famous people who were born, lived in and still live in various
states from which you might not expect a famous person to hail.
It's always a mistake to think a state with a smaller population
is not the likely place of origin of a celebrity. With Maine being
a state the vast majority of which comprises pristine forest land
and bucolic wilderness, one might think that not too many famous
people would come from or live there. But the list of Maine celebrities
is plenty long and full of some very famous names.
It's certainly no surprise to anyone that Stephen
King is a Maine native. What started with Carrie, a book he threw
in his waste basket while living in a trailer home as an English teacher
barely getting by catapulted him to literary stardom. As the story
goes, his wife, Tabitha, an excellent writer in her own right, fished
the book from his trash can, read it and encouraged him to send it
to a publisher. Had he not heeded her advice, he'd still be teaching
English.
Some of the people appearing on Maine's celebrity list may also appear on the celebrity lists of other states. It's certainly not an uncommon situation. In fact, while Ethan Allen is most closely associated with Vermont's Green Mountain Boys, he came from Connecticut and moved to Vermont.
Below is the list of celebrities associated with Maine. If you disagree with any we list or find us in
error for not listing one of your favorite people, please let us
know by sending and email to: jim.hyde@newenglandtimes.com. We'll take your recommendation under advisement, research the person named and make any correction should they pan out. The criteria we use to select those who appear below aren't necessarily based on the degree of fame they have achieved. That's one variable tough to nail down, but if they have achieved some fame, however fleeting, we believe they deserve a mention. Some may be better known to you than others, but they are all notable for one reason or another.

In the Beginning There Was Plymouth Learn about how the Pilgrims built and established Plimoth Plantation. It was hardly an easy task, made all the more difficult by weather and failed crops. It's now a living history museum well worth the visit.

Make Sure to Check the Weather Before you Come.
Mother Nature is a caprious old gal. If you don't like the weather, wait a while. That's the saying in the northern most New England states where the weather changes can be abrupt and tough to drive through, although the folks who clear the roads up here in winter do a smashing job.
