MAINE CAMPING AND CAMPGROUNDS
We are always on the lookout for great camping spots, particularly those in the wild. But we can't find them all by ourselves. If you know of an great campground that is not on this list, please email jim.hyde@newenglandtimes.com. We'll review it and if it meets our standards, we'll add it to the list. To campground owners in Maine: If your own any of the inns on the list below, or if your inn is not on the list but should be, please contact us for our rates. We have packages for every budget, all of which have been rolled back to our 2007 rates to help you out in the current economic environment. Maine has some of the wildest areas of any of the New England states, many of which are in Aroostook County in the northern part of the state. It's there that the wild, pristine and breath-taking coalesce into the perfect wilderness for camping; the perfect way to enjoy a New England getaway and a Maine vacation. River, streams and palms provide plenty iof fishing and the wildlife there is truly wild, so camping here comes with a caveat: Unless you're camping at an established campground or have considerable experience in camping in the wild, you need to be fully schooled in how to have a pleasant stay in the woods. The one rule in all New England states applies as much to camping as it does to hunting: Always come out with more than what you took in (i.e. make sure that you leave the wilderness even cleaner and free of man-made packaging than it was when you entered). For those more interested in enjoying the wilderness, but in an environment that offers some degree of control, we offer the established campgrounds below as superb New England getaway spots.
